Forget sticking to the usual lotus and red bean. This Mid-Autumn, InterContinental Kuala Lumpur is taking a broader approach to the traditional mooncake, with its latest collection bringing avocado, pistachio, durian and black sesame into the mix.
Its Moonlight Jewels Mooncake Collection, created by Tao Chinese Cuisine’s Master Dim Sum Chef Lo, features a mix of baked and snow skin mooncakes. The flavours range from familiar white lotus and red bean to combinations such as avocado with pistachio and black sesame with salted egg yolk cream.
The collection includes nine flavours in total. Among the more unusual options is the Pandan Skin Avocado Lava Pistachio with Mixed Nuts.
As for the snow skin selection, it includes Black Sesame with Salted Egg Yolk Cream, Sweet Potato and Yam with Single Yolk and Lemon with Hawthorn Cherry Jelly and Green Tea Paste.
For durian fans, the returning Musang King Durian with Oats is priced at RM63 per piece. Another returning flavour is Butterfly Pea Flower with Snow Bird’s Nest and White Lotus Paste, at RM48.
Traditional flavours have not been left out. The baked range also includes White Lotus with Single Yolk, White Lotus with Mixed Nuts and Red Bean with Mixed Nuts.
The mooncakes come in three four-piece gift boxes, with each design taking a different approach. The Radiance Collection comes in a pink vanity-style case with cherry blossom detailing. The Bloom Collection is housed in a turquoise case with floral and gold accents. The Celestial Collection, which returns from last year, uses gold and earthy tones.
The pricing varies by collection and purchase period. Early-bird rates, which ran from July 15 to August 9, set the Bloom Collection at RM194 per box and the Celestial Collection at RM146 per box.
From August 10 to September 25, the special privilege rates are RM206.40 for Bloom, RM166.40 for Celestial and RM254.40 for the Radiance Collection.
Individual mooncakes are also available, ranging from RM45 to RM47 for baked varieties and RM48 to RM63 for snowskin varieties. For larger orders, bulk rates are available on the Bloom and Celestial collections, with prices dropping to RM148 and RM105 per box respectively for orders of 101 boxes or more.
The Mid-Autumn offering extends beyond mooncakes. The hotel is selling Ti Kuan Yin King tea at RM108 per pack, or RM118 with a teapot. OneSixFive Lounge is also offering a Celestial Tea Symphony Afternoon Tea during the season at RM159.60 per set.
The menu includes Long Jing Tea Raisin Scones, Emperor Tea Salmon Mini Crepes with Caviar, Oolong Chantilly with Almond Cake and Black Sesame Snow Skin with Salted Egg Yolk.
Mooncake buyers will also be entered into a Mid-Autumn lucky draw. Each box counts as one entry. The top prize is a two-night stay for two at InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, including return flights, valued at RM5,700. The second prize is a two-night stay at InterContinental Kuala Lumpur with Club Lounge access, valued at RM2,300. Fifty third-prize winners will receive a one-year Indulge Membership.
