Netflix has added several high-profile names to the voice cast of Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, its upcoming animated take on Roald Dahl’s world.
Nicola Coughlan, Kate Winslet, Helena Bonham Carter, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo and Christopher Chung have joined the cast. They will appear alongside previously announced stars Kit Connor as Charlie Paley and Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka.
The film is set for a global theatrical release on Nov 5, 2027, with Netflix streaming it from December 22. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle international distribution for the cinema release.
The new story moves the action beyond the events of the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In this version, Wonka has spent years in prison after turning a child into a blueberry during the infamous Golden Ticket contest.
After serving his sentence, Wonka returns to his factory with plans to change his outlook and bring some sweetness back into the world. His plans run into trouble when Charlie Paley and his friends decide to break into the factory.
The group is facing eviction and plans to steal a valuable Wonka Bar to save their homes. Their break-in soon takes them into the factory, where they encounter the dangers and strange creations inside.
The film is directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan. Stern previously worked on The LEGO Batman Movie and Green Eggs and Ham, while Bogan directed Spirit Untamed.
The production also includes Shrek producer Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo. Waititi is an executive producer in addition to voicing Wonka.
Netflix says the film will feature original songs, new characters and some familiar faces from the Wonka universe. It is being produced as an animated feature rather than a live-action adaptation.
For Connor, who leads the film as Charlie, the project offers a new interpretation of the familiar story while keeping elements of its original tone. He said he was drawn to the directors’ vision and the film’s approach to the world created by Dahl.
The new casting announcement gives the film a broader ensemble ahead of its 2027 release, with Coughlan, Winslet and Bonham Carter among the latest additions.
Netflix has also announced plans to expand the franchise through merchandise tied to the film, including a toy line from Moose Toys and a range of Wonka-branded food products from Ferrero. Those products are separate from the film itself, with the toy line planned for 2027.
