Monash University Malaysia has secured a US$1 million grant from the Open Society Foundations to develop practical tools that will help industries, investors and policymakers assess the technical and financial viability of hydrogen for industrial decarbonisation.
The three-year project, Industrial Decarbonisation through Hydrogen Technology, brings together researchers from Monash Malaysia’s School of Engineering, Centre for Net-Zero Technology and School of Business, combining expertise in engineering, hydrogen technologies, economics, finance and policy.
Led by Professor Ir Dr Chong Meng Nan, the initiative will examine both green and blue hydrogen pathways, focusing on technical feasibility, costs, financing requirements and investment risks.
Hydrogen is increasingly seen as a potential solution for industrial processes that are difficult to electrify, although wider adoption continues to depend on technology readiness, infrastructure, cost, financing and supportive policy frameworks.
The funding will support the development and validation of technology and financial toolkits, including data collection, modelling and scenario analysis. Industry players and policymakers will also be engaged to ensure the tools address real-world investment and decarbonisation needs.
Monash Malaysia said the project aims to reduce uncertainty surrounding hydrogen adoption, lower investment risks and accelerate industrial decarbonisation, with approaches designed to be replicated across Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.
The project commenced on July 1, 2026, with research and engagement activities planned across Malaysia, ASEAN and internationally.
