No Malaysians have been reported affected by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia early today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The ministry said the earthquake occurred at 4.58am local time on Aug 15, with the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta closely coordinating with relevant Indonesian authorities to ascertain the safety and well-being of Malaysians in the affected areas.
“At this stage, the Ministry can confirm that there have been no reports of Malaysians affected by this incident,” it said in a media advisory issued today.
The embassy has also successfully established contact with a group of 16 Malaysian tourists known to be in the vicinity of the earthquake, with all of them confirmed to be safe and in good health.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would continue to monitor developments following the earthquake and coordinate with the relevant authorities as necessary.
Meanwhile, Malaysians residing in or travelling to affected regions in Indonesia have been urged to remain vigilant and prioritise their personal safety.
They have also been advised to strictly comply with all safety instructions and directives issued by local authorities.
The ministry said Malaysians in the affected areas should continue to exercise caution as the situation develops.
