Former Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun has expressed his readiness to step down as Negeri Sembilan PKR chairman following the party’s poor performance in the recent state election.
Aminuddin said he accepted the demand from six PKR branch chiefs in the state that he take responsibility after the party won only two of the 15 state seats it contested.
“I accept this responsibility. I am the leader, so I am ready to be responsible. I do not want to run away from responsibility or hide behind various excuses,” he said during his closing speech on the second day of the PKR National Congress at the Melaka International Trade Centre here today.
While he is prepared to step down, Aminuddin said the final decision would rest with the party leadership and that he was ready to accept any action deemed necessary for PKR’s future.
At the same time, the PKR vice-president stressed that the electoral defeat should not be a reason to stop fighting, but should instead mark the beginning of efforts to rebuild the party.
In the Aug 1 Negeri Sembilan state election, PKR retained only the Chuah and Sri Tanjung seats out of the 15 it contested.
Aminuddin also suffered defeat in the Linggi state seat, losing by 2,976 votes in a three-cornered contest. Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli won with 9,139 votes. In comparison, Aminuddin secured 6,163 votes, and Bersatu’s Datuk Zamri Md Said received 391 votes.
