The level of integrity among civil servants is showing a positive upward trend, driven by various government initiatives and mechanisms aimed at strengthening values in the public service, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said.
He said the improvement followed the introduction of several integrity initiatives, including the Integrity and Governance Awards (AIGA), which had begun to produce encouraging results.
“We introduced these integrity initiatives to improve and strengthen integrity among civil servants. Alhamdulillah, they are showing signs that our efforts are beginning to succeed,” he told Bernama after officiating the Integrity Fun Walk 2026 at Dataran DBKL here today.
Shamsul Azri, who is also Malaysian Institute of Integrity (IIM) chairman, said efforts to strengthen integrity must extend beyond the public service by raising awareness among the wider community.
He said the programme provided a platform to promote the importance of integrity and encourage people to uphold such values in their daily lives.
The event, featuring three- and five-kilometre categories, drew about 2,000 participants comprising civil servants, government agency personnel and non-governmental organisation representatives.
Shamsul Azri said the underlying message was that integrity should be upheld regardless of whether a person was being observed.
“The most important thing is to instil in society and among civil servants that integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching,” he said.
