Foreign institutions extended their net selling streak on Bursa Malaysia to two consecutive weeks, recording net outflows of RM623.6 million last week amid continued cautious sentiment in the domestic equity market.
According to Kenanga Research, foreign institutions were net sellers on all five trading days, with the largest outflow recorded on Friday at RM181.3 million.
This was followed by net foreign selling of RM171.4 million on Tuesday, RM125.9 million on Thursday, RM92.2 million on Wednesday and RM52.8 million on Monday.
Despite the broad-based selling, several sectors continued to attract foreign buying.
Transportation and Logistics recorded the largest net foreign inflow at RM103.8 million, followed by Telecommunication and Media at RM34.9 million and Energy at RM19.7 million.
On the other hand, Financial Services bore the brunt of foreign selling, recording net outflows of RM469.3 million.
The Industrial Products and Services sector registered net foreign outflows of RM121.2 million, while Consumer Products and Services saw RM89.6 million in net selling.
Local institutions continued to provide support to the market, extending their net buying streak to three consecutive weeks with net inflows of RM355.5 million.
Retail investors also returned as net buyers after two consecutive weeks of net selling, recording net inflows of RM268.1 million during the week.
Trading activity, however, weakened across all investor groups. Average daily trading volume (ADTV) declined 10.9% among local institutions, 3.7% among foreign institutions and 1.1% among retail investors.
The continued foreign outflows highlight persistent caution among overseas investors, while buying by local institutions and retailers provided some offset to the selling pressure.
With foreign funds remaining net sellers across every trading session last week, market sentiment is likely to remain closely tied to global developments and domestic corporate earnings, alongside investor positioning ahead of further market catalysts.
