MACC Closes Xavier Jayakumar Probe, No Charges Filed

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that its investigation into former Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Dr Xavier Jayakumar, which began in 2021, has been completed with no prosecution brought against him, Bernama reported.

MACC said the decision followed a thorough review of the information, documents and evidence gathered in relation to the case. Two investigation papers involving the former Kuala Langat MP were opened in 2021 under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.

“After investigations and scrutiny of the relevant facts, documents and evidence were carried out, the Deputy Public Prosecutor decided to classify the case as Kemas Untuk Simpan (KUS) in 2024 as there was insufficient evidence to charge Xavier,” it said in a statement today.

The commission said the duration of an investigation depends on the complexity of a case as well as the need to obtain, examine and verify relevant information and evidence.

It also stressed that investigations are conducted professionally and transparently based on facts and evidence without interference from any party.

“Accordingly, all parties are urged not to make any speculation or assumptions regarding the matter as the investigation has been completed,” it said.

The clarification followed a report in which former Petaling Jaya MP Kua Kia Soong questioned the status of the corruption investigation, saying the lack of an update had created an accountability gap.

Xavier had been investigated following the arrest of his close associate M A Thinagaran, who was suspected of receiving bribes from several companies over projects awarded by the ministry in 2019, when Xavier was its minister under the Pakatan Harapan administration.

Xavier recently confirmed that he had rejoined PKR after leaving the party in 2021. He subsequently joined Parti Bangsa Malaysia in 2022.
