Immigration Truck Driver Suspended As Investigation Continues

The driver of a Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) truck involved in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of three members of a family at Maju Junction, Jalan Sultan Ismail, has been suspended pending the completion of investigations.

Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the immediate action was taken to allow the authorities to conduct their investigation, while JIM would also carry out an internal probe into compliance with its standard operating procedures.

“An immediate action by the department is to suspend the driver until the case is resolved.

“We are giving full cooperation to the police in this case. JIM is also conducting an internal investigation from the aspect of compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP),” he said when contacted by Harian Metro today.

The crash occurred at around 1am yesterday when the unladen Isuzu ‘Black Maria’ truck, which was travelling from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office towards Chow Kit following an operation against undocumented migrants, entered the Maju Junction intersection while its traffic light was red. Its beacon and siren were activated at the time.

A Proton Saga travelling straight on a green light reportedly could not avoid the truck, resulting in a collision that caused the JIM vehicle to lose control before hitting four pedestrians from the same family and an Inokom Matrix.

Three family members, Shaik Mohd Firdaus Shaikh Yahya, 53, and his daughters Siti Nor Sazlin, 25, and Siti Darwisya Auni, 12, died at the scene.

The victims’ 55-year-old wife and mother sustained injuries to her head, hands and legs and remains under treatment at the Red Zone of Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
