FT, Selangor To Jointly Find Solutions To Mitigate Flooding Issues In Klang Valley

The Selangor and federal governments will jointly find solutions to mitigate flooding in the Klang Valley, with five key measures agreed to reduce flood risks affecting residents.

The measures were agreed at a meeting between Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari on flood retention ponds and related infrastructure today.

As an immediate step, both sides will hold a technical meeting within two weeks to identify project locations, scope, estimated costs, funding sources and implementation methods. Preliminary details will be prepared ahead of the next Parliament sitting and the tabling of Budget 2027.

The two governments will also assess whether Batu Dam and Klang Gate Dam have sufficient capacity to meet water management needs over the next 20 to 30 years, while identifying suitable upstream locations for new flood retention ponds.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) will identify three existing ponds — Kampung Laksamana Pond, Sungai Kertas Pond and Bukit Lagong Pond — for upgrades to increase their flood retention capacity.

However, the Bukit Lagong Pond, located within a forest reserve, would require the area to be degazetted before it can be used as a flood retention pond.

Meanwhile, Selangor JPS and Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory JPS will coordinate the identification of rivers in both areas requiring dredging and silt removal. The Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory JPS will also help identify a suitable 30-acre site in Selangor for the disposal of dredged silt.

Regular meetings will subsequently be held to monitor progress and address outstanding issues, with both governments stressing the urgency of tackling flooding in the Klang Valley.

The statement noted that three in every 10 Malaysians reside in Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, while the two areas collectively contribute 41.7 per cent to Malaysia’s economy.
