This Merdeka weekend, Malaysians have not one but two reasons to celebrate. As the nation commemorates its 69th National Day on 31 August 2026, the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers will also mark its 27th anniversary, celebrating nearly three decades as a symbol of Malaysia’s progress and national pride.
To celebrate this special milestone, families, tourists and visitors are invited to enjoy a uniquely Malaysian celebration at KLCC from 29 to 31 August 2026. Two of the country’s most iconic attractions, Petrosains, The Discovery Centre and PETRONAS Twin Towers Sky Xperience come together for three days of cultural performances, STEM discoveries, patriotic experiences and exclusive promotions under the theme “Curiosity Unites Us”.
At Petrosains, visitors can look forward to an exciting line-up of family-friendly activities that bring Malaysia’s rich heritage to life. From patriotic poem recitations and Merdeka-themed costume competitions, where exciting prizes await the winners, to showcases of musical instruments representing Malaysia’s diverse cultural communities, the programme celebrates the stories, traditions and values that continue to unite the nation.
Children and families can also participate in colouring and creative craft sessions inspired by the spirit of Merdeka, while discovering how sustainability and creativity can go hand in hand through a special Merdeka Craft Corner, created using reusable materials such as plastic bottles, cardboard, magazines and bottle caps. The initiative encourages visitors to reimagine everyday items into meaningful creations while promoting environmental awareness. Visitors can also enjoy a range of special Merdeka-themed STEM activities, including the Colours of Malaysia Animation Station, where multicultural Malaysian characters come to life through stop-motion storytelling; the Jalur Gemilang Paper Heli Challenge, which combines creativity and aerodynamics through hands-on paper helicopter building; and the Thinking Spot! Edu-to-Cart experience, featuring engaging STEM demonstrations that inspire appreciation for both the environment and the communities we call home.
Adding a unique Petrosains touch, visitors will have the opportunity to rediscover traditional Malaysian games through a STEM lens. Games such as Congkak, Batu Seremban and Dam Haji will demonstrate how science, mathematics, strategy and problem-solving have long existed within cultural traditions, transforming nostalgic childhood experiences into engaging learning opportunities. Visitors can also unleash their creativity through Merdeka Pixel Art Workshop, the LED Flashlight Workshop, the Merdeka Shrink & Clink Workshop, and a specially curated Merdeka-themed roleplay show, offering interactive experiences that blend learning, innovation and patriotic spirit.
Beyond Kuala Lumpur, families in Kuantan, Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu can also join in the festive celebrations through the ongoing Merdeka campaign at their respective Petrosains PlaySmart centres. Visitors can look forward to a variety of exciting activities, including Science Shows, RoboBud Showcases, hands-on workshops and many more interactive experiences designed for the whole family.
Meanwhile, at PETRONAS Twin Towers Xperience, visitors can continue their Merdeka adventure through specially curated activities designed for all ages. These include patriotic face painting inspired by the Jalur Gemilang and the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers, as well as the exciting 3 Towers Photo Competition, where visitors can capture stunning views of Kuala Lumpur’s iconic skyline from the Level 86 Sky Deck. Showcasing a rare perspective of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, Menara Merdeka Maybank and KL Tower within a single frame, the competition invites visitors to celebrate Malaysia’s architectural achievements while creating memorable moments to share with family and friends.
In conjunction with Malaysia’s National Day and the 27th anniversary of the PETRONAS Twin Towers, visitors can also enjoy captivating traditional dance performances celebrating the nation’s rich cultural heritage. Showcasing traditional costumes, music and choreography from Malaysia’s diverse communities, these performances aim to foster a deeper appreciation of the country’s multicultural identity while promoting unity and national pride.
To further enhance the Merdeka celebration experience, visitors can shop for exclusive Merdeka-themed merchandise at XPLORASI-Petrosains Gift Shop and Sky Shop, with exciting promotions including up to 40% discounts and Buy One Free One offers on selected items. Adding even greater value, the PETRONAS Twin Towers Sky Xperience x Petrosains Double Deal invites guests to enjoy two iconic attractions in one visit, with introductory combo packages starting from RM29.70 per person.
Visitors may also indulge in a specially curated Merdeka menu at Sky Café by Maja, providing a unique opportunity to savour the festive spirit while creating lasting memories with family and friends.
The celebration reflects the Petrosains’ ongoing commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that make science accessible, engaging and relevant to everyday life, while fostering a deeper appreciation for Malaysia’s cultural heritage and collective identity.
“This year’s celebration is particularly meaningful as the PETRONAS Twin Towers marks its 27th anniversary on Malaysia’s National Day.
