Bank Negara Malaysia reported total official reserve assets of USD132.07 billion (RM590.2 billion) as of July 31, 2026. The reserves position remains sufficient to finance 4.7 months of imports of goods and services, while providing 0.9 times coverage of total short-term external debt.
Foreign currency reserves formed the foundation of Malaysia’s international reserve assets, totaling USD116.77 billion at the end of the month. Within this component, foreign currency securities accounted for USD87.83 billion, while total currency and deposit holdings reached USD28.94 billion. The deposit balance was held across other national central banks, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and commercial banking institutions.
Other elements contributing to official reserve assets included Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) valued at USD5.97 billion and physical gold holdings standing at USD5.78 billion, representing 1.44 million fine troy ounces. Malaysia’s IMF reserve position was recorded at USD1.30 billion, alongside USD2.25 billion in other reserve assets, which includes investments in the BIS Asian Bond Fund.
Beyond the core official reserve assets, Bank Negara Malaysia disclosed USD368.49 million in other foreign currency assets not formally included in the primary reserve definition.
This supplementary pool comprised USD301.08 million in foreign currency deposits, USD67.24 million in non-reserve securities, and USD0.17 million in other financial instruments, reflecting ongoing balance sheet management in support of national financial stability.
