The government has begun cloud seeding operations in haze-affected areas, particularly those recording Air Pollutant Index (API) readings above 150, as well as locations where dam water levels are declining.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the operations are being carried out jointly by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
He said the move is also aimed at addressing falling water levels at several dams amid the current hot weather and reducing the risk of water supply disruptions.
“Today, cloud seeding is being carried out in Putrajaya, while from Sept 3 to 5, operations will be conducted in Sarawak, Kedah and Perlis,” he told reporters after officiating the KKDW Rural Entrepreneur Hub at the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA) 2026 at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) today.
Ahmad Zahid said the operations would be carried out based on need and weather conditions, as suitable cloud formations and their movement must first be assessed to determine whether rain can reach the targeted areas.
The cloud seeding effort comes as haze levels remain elevated in Sarawak, where three areas recorded hazardous API readings as of 12:30 pm today.
According to the Department of Environment’s Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), Serian recorded an API reading of 412, followed by Samarahan at 332 and Kuching at 304.
Sri Aman recorded a very unhealthy reading of 228.
