Govt Initiates Cloud Seeding In Sarawak, Kedah And Perlis

The government is initiating a cloud seeding operation across Sarawak, Kedah and Perlis from Sept 3 to 5, 2026, targeting 13 dams as part of efforts to restore water levels and safeguard water supply.

The operation, carried out by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), covers eight dams in Sarawak, four in Kedah and one in Perlis.

In Sarawak, the operation will target the Batang Ai, Bakun, Murum, Bengoh, Gerugu, Assyakirin, Sika and Matang dams. In Kedah, cloud seeding will cover the Pedu, Muda, Ahning and Beris dams, while Timah Tasoh Dam will be targeted in Perlis.

The exercise is aimed at helping raise reservoir levels towards optimal conditions, ensuring the continuity of water supply and supporting the long-term sustainability of water resources.

It also serves as a supporting measure in dealing with potential haze episodes.

However, authorities said the success of the cloud seeding operation will depend on the availability of suitable cloud formations and favourable atmospheric conditions during the three-day exercise.
