Prime Video has cancelled Spider-Noir after one season, ending Nicolas Cage’s first lead television role despite strong reviews and a substantial number of Emmy nominations.
The decision does not mark the end of Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television’s partnership. The companies are still developing several series based on characters from Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. One of those projects is reportedly nearing a series order, although its premise has not been revealed.
Spider-Noir was the second series developed under the deal and the first to reach screens. The earlier project, Silk, was cancelled before production.
According to Deadline, the series performed well with critics and viewers but did not maintain its initial audience. It recorded 851 million viewing minutes in the US during its first week and 2.6 billion minutes across its first six weeks, based on Nielsen data.
The show also earned a 92 per cent critics’ score and a 90 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its 11 Emmy nominations made it Prime Video’s most nominated series of 2026.
Its viewing figures were not enough to offset its production costs. The series was filmed in both colour and black and white, making it a more expensive production. It also fell out of Prime Video’s daily Top 10 rankings relatively quickly.
Cage played Ben Reilly, a private investigator in 1930s New York who becomes the city’s only superhero after a personal tragedy forces him to confront his past. The cast included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson.
The cancellation leaves few major loose ends. The first season told a largely complete story, although some plot threads remained unresolved.
Amazon MGM and Sony have not yet announced which of their other Marvel-based projects will be the next to move forward.
