Hang Seng Ends Week Higher Despite Mid-Week Volatility

Hong Kong equities ended the week higher, with the Hang Seng Index (HSI) gaining 83.88 points, or 0.33%, from 25,566.99 on 31 August to 25,650.87 on 4 September.

The HSI started the week slightly lower on Monday before falling 0.93% on Tuesday as investors remained cautious over US interest-rate expectations and rising Treasury yields.

The index remained under pressure through the middle of the week before staging a sharp rebound on Friday, gaining 437.56 points, or 1.74%, to close at 25,650.87.

The Hang Seng Tech Index rose 2.27% to 4,569.80 points on Friday, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index climbed 2.02% to 8,555.03 points, as technology and mainland-related counters led the recovery.

The week’s volatility came as investors weighed US monetary-policy expectations, economic data and regional growth signals. Higher Treasury yields and concerns over potential US rate hikes weighed on sentiment earlier in the week.

However, Friday’s strong rebound pointed to improved risk appetite towards Chinese equities and technology stocks, helping the HSI erase much of its earlier losses.
