A sequel to Backrooms could be on the way, with Kane Parsons reportedly set to return as director.
The horror film, which began as a viral YouTube series, is reportedly getting a follow-up. Polygon reports that Parsons has been attached to direct Backrooms 2; however, no official announcement has been made.
Parsons created Backrooms as a YouTube series after being inspired by an image of an empty yellow room. The series became popular online before A24 turned it into a feature film, with Parsons directing.
The film soon became a major box-office success. It reportedly made nearly US$400 million worldwide, around 40 times its production budget.
Parsons had already indicated that Backrooms could continue. In a May interview with Variety, he said the project was always intended to extend beyond the first film and confirmed he was not finished with the franchise.
That possibility gained more weight in June, when entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider reported that Parsons was working on a new project with Backrooms producer Osgood Perkins. At the time, it was unclear whether they were developing a sequel or a separate film.
For now, there are few details about Backrooms 2. A release date, plot and returning cast have not been confirmed.
If Parsons does return, the sequel would mark the next chapter in a franchise that started as an internet horror series before making the move to cinemas.
