OpenAI is deepening its cooperation with Samsung Electronics on the joint production and research of next-generation chips as the ChatGPT maker expands its semiconductor and artificial intelligence operations.
Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, said Samsung was among the areas where OpenAI had made the most progress in its chip development, without providing further details on the cooperation.
“One of the areas where we have made the most progress and gained the most recognition with Samsung Electronics is our joint production and research on the next-generation chips we are developing,” Kim said at a press conference in Seoul today.
The cooperation extends beyond chip development, with Kim describing Samsung Electronics as one of the largest-scale deployments of ChatGPT globally, with employees using the technology across research and development, marketing and sales. Samsung said it could not confirm information related to customers.
OpenAI unveiled its first custom AI chip, Jalapeno, in June, designed with Broadcom for AI inference workloads. The company said at the time that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co would manufacture the chips.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix had also signed letters of intent last year to supply memory chips for OpenAI’s Stargate data centre project.
Kim said demand for memory chips would continue to grow as increasingly advanced chips are needed for faster and more complex computing, making cooperation with South Korean semiconductor suppliers a priority.
OpenAI also said ChatGPT Enterprise users at South Korean companies and institutions had surged about 28-fold by the end of August from a year earlier, as businesses expanded AI use across functions including legal, sales, finance, marketing and operations.
