Outlook On China After Surprise August Export Data

China’s exports jumped 25% in August from a year earlier on strong demand for autos and high-tech goods as its record trade surplus widened further, its customs agency said Tuesday. The data was broadly in line with what economists had expected and comes just ahead  between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump.

While trade surplus expanded to +USD119.09b in Aug-26, up from +USD101.01b a year earlier, bringing the year-to-date total to +USD806b and putting the annual figure on course to go above last year’s record of +USD1.2t.

Exports surged +25.0%yoy to USD401.4b (Jul-26: +24%yoy) as sustained momentum in the global AI infrastructure buildout boosted regional demand across Asia, driven by sharp growth in exports to ASEAN (+30.2%yoy), South Korea (+40%yoy), and Taiwan (+40%yoy). Concurrently, exports to the United States jumped +34.4%yoy, widening China’s monthly bilateral surplus with the US over +USD29b, its highest point since the start of the second Trump administration in Jan-25, which intensifies diplomatic pressure from Washington regarding China’s domestic demand imbalances ahead of the upcoming summit between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, imports grew sustainably by +28.2%yoy to USD282.36b, slightly below market expectations of +30%yoy but picking up pace from +27.5%yoy in Jul-26. Higher imports were underpinned by robust demand for raw commodities and tech inputs required for Asia’s broader AI supply chain integration.

MBSB noted that the widening trade imbalance reinforces China’s near-term growth outlook via strong external sector contributions, yet it simultaneously increases its structural economic vulnerability by deepening reliance on foreign demand while domestic consumption remains sluggish. In addition, increasing reliance on exports leaves the outlook vulnerable to renewed trade tensions and protectionist measures, particularly as its large trade surplus attracts greater scrutiny from major trading partners.
