Pakatan Harapan (PH) has backed the government’s efforts to tackle corruption, leakages and abuse of power, saying individuals convicted of such offences, particularly in high-profile cases, should serve their full court-imposed sentences.
In a statement, the PH Presidential Council said it fully supported the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s previous call for such cases to be investigated thoroughly without compromise against any party found guilty.
“Pakatan Harapan as a political coalition that from the beginning has carried the struggle for institutional reform, good governance and rejection of corruption and abuse of power holds the position that any individual convicted of corruption or abuse of power, especially involving high-profile cases, must fully serve the sentence imposed by the court,” it said.
PH also stressed that ongoing judicial proceedings must be allowed to conclude in an orderly and independent manner, without creating the perception that other considerations had taken precedence over the judicial process.
It said this was important as Malaysia works to strengthen governance and restore public confidence in the country’s institutions.
“Therefore, any decision in high-profile cases must take into account public confidence in the country’s seriousness in implementing this agenda,” PH said.
The coalition added that several high-profile corruption cases in the past had damaged Malaysia’s international reputation, and said the country’s efforts to rebuild confidence in its institutions and its ability to tackle corruption must be maintained.
PH said it would continue to uphold the Federal Constitution and respect the country’s institutions while defending the principles of reform, the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
