Malaysia has completed a medical drone delivery Proof of Concept (PoC) involving the transportation of blood samples between two hospitals in Pahang, marking a potential new option for healthcare logistics.
The PoC, carried out by Alphaswift Industries Sdn. Bhd. in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), involved flights between Hospital Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (HOSHAS) in Temerloh and Hospital Bera.
The project is described as the first in Malaysia to use drones to transport blood samples between two hospitals, testing whether unmanned aircraft can help move medical materials where distance and access are key challenges.
The trial followed two years of development and regulatory work, with about RM500,000 invested in developing the medical drone delivery system and meeting regulatory requirements.
At a recognition ceremony in Hospital Bera, representatives said Pahang’s geographical size and the distance between districts could make drone technology useful for selected healthcare logistics applications, particularly where speed and accessibility are important.
Alphaswift CEO Dr Shian Lee said the company had spent two years working towards regulatory compliance for drone-based blood transport.

The company said its next confirmed medical drone delivery project will be carried out in Tawau, Sabah, as it looks to test the technology in other parts of Malaysia.
The medical drone programme builds on more than 1,000 drone flights, over 400 hours of flight time and more than 10,000 kilometres of cargo-delivery testing.
The Pahang PoC will provide a basis for further evaluation of medical drone applications, subject to operational needs and regulatory requirements.
