Theta Edge Bhd’s wholly owned subsidiary Theta Telecoms Sdn Bhd (TTEL) has been appointed as a network operator and strategic partner to develop telecommunications common network infrastructure along the Shah Alam Line right of way.
Theta Edge said TTEL accepted the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from Prasarana Integrated Development Sdn Bhd on Sept 7, 2026.
Under the partnership, TTEL will install, maintain and service the required telecommunications hardware, provide telecommunications services and generate revenue from the project. Recurring revenue generated will be shared with Prasarana at an agreed rate.
Prasarana Integrated Development is a subsidiary of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, the government-owned entity responsible for several of Malaysia’s public transportation assets and services.
The project will involve network design and engineering, civil works, fibre-optic cable installation, integration with existing commercial fibre networks and the installation of network equipment.
The partnership is also intended to monetise the Shah Alam Line’s right of way along its tracks, stations, developments and other locations by providing telecommunications network services and other value-added services using the underlying infrastructure.
Theta Edge said the arrangement would allow TTEL to leverage the rail corridor, enterprise market and Prasarana’s customer base and brand to develop telecommunications-related revenue opportunities.
The contract has an initial five-year term commencing Sept 1, 2026, with the possibility of two successive five-year extensions.
Any renewal will be subject to Prasarana reviewing TTEL’s performance and compliance with the terms and conditions of the LOA. If both extensions are exercised, the partnership could therefore run for as long as 15 years.
Under the revenue-sharing arrangement, Prasarana will be entitled to a minimum annual payment of RM500,000 or 13% of the project’s gross revenue, whichever is higher, throughout the contract period, with the remaining revenue accruing to TTEL.
TTEL will also be responsible for ensuring that fibre cables, equipment and supporting infrastructure installed along the Shah Alam Line do not interfere with train operations, railway maintenance, signalling, power, communications or safety systems.
Before construction, installation, testing or maintenance work begins, the company must obtain the necessary approvals and permits, undertake site inspections and risk assessments, prepare required safety and work plans, and ensure personnel are appropriately trained and supervised.
