Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake an official visit to the Maldives from Sept 14 to 15, with talks expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, education, healthcare and digital integration.
Anwar is visiting at the invitation of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and will hold bilateral talks with him during the visit, including discussions on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The two sides are also expected to explore greater cooperation in capacity building, tourism and sustainable development as they look to strengthen long-term bilateral ties.
Two Memorandums of Understanding covering defence cooperation and Islamic affairs will also be exchanged in the presence of both leaders.
Trade remains a key part of the relationship, with Malaysia and the Maldives recording RM762.78 million in bilateral trade in 2025. Malaysia recorded a trade surplus of RM751.67 million.
The Maldives is Malaysia’s sixth-largest trading partner in South Asia and remains an important destination for Malaysian exports.
Anwar’s visit comes as both countries seek to build on bilateral relations established in 1968, with greater cooperation across areas of mutual benefit.
