Mount Semeru in East Java erupted three times on Monday morning, with the highest ash column rising 1,000 metres above the volcano’s summit, Indonesian authorities said.
The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) recorded the highest eruption at 6.28am local time, when the ash column reached about 4,676 metres above sea level.
The eruption lasted 140 seconds, according to data published by PVMBG. Earlier eruptions were recorded at 4.20am and 5.53am, producing ash columns about 500 metres and 800 metres above the summit respectively.
Other volcanoes also erupted on Monday.
Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted at 12.39am, sending a thick grey ash column about 200 metres above its summit towards the east. The eruption lasted 53 seconds.
Meanwhile, Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted at 4.30am, producing an ash column about 200 metres above its summit.
PVMBG said the white ash column from Ili Lewotolok was observed moving northwest, with the eruption lasting 34 seconds.
