Netflix subscribers in Malaysia will soon have to pay more for their monthly streaming fix.
The company has informed subscribers by email that the price of one monthly plan will increase from RM49.90 to RM55.90 from October 12.
That means subscribers on the affected plan will pay RM6 more each month. Over a year, the increase works out to RM72, bringing the annual cost to RM670.80 if the subscription is kept for 12 months.
Netflix sent the price notice on September 12. In the email, the company said it was updating its prices to support continued improvements to its service and content.
It also pointed to 89 new releases scheduled for next month, though the email did not specify how the additional revenue from the price increase would be allocated.
For subscribers, the change adds another recurring cost to the monthly entertainment budget. That may be easy to absorb for regular Netflix viewers, but could be harder to justify for those who already pay for several streaming services.
The increase may also prompt subscribers to take a closer look at which streaming services they actually use. While a few extra ringgit on one subscription may seem insignificant, multiple price increases across different services can add up to a more substantial expense over the course of a year.
Netflix’s email also reminded customers that they can manage their membership if they want to change their subscription.
