The conditional pardon granted to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak does not change the status of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) cases involving him, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said.
Abd Halim said cases and investigations that remain pending would continue as usual, with each matter being handled separately according to the allegations and issues under investigation.
“Cases that are still pending will continue as usual. As things stand, the status quo remains,” he said at a press conference in Kajang today.
He was responding to questions on whether Najib’s conditional pardon could affect the 1MDB cases and appeals that are still ongoing.
Abd Halim stressed that the various cases should not be treated as a single matter, as each investigation concerns different allegations, issues and complaints.
“We need to understand that every case is different. They cannot be handled as though they are the same case, because each investigation concerns specific issues being examined or particular complaints received,” he said.
His remarks came a day after Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara, according to the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department.
