Powerful Typhoon Dujuan approached Japan’s Pacific coast on Sept 21, bringing torrential rain and violent winds while raising the risk of landslides and flash floods across the Kanto region and other parts of eastern Japan, Reuters reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned conditions could deteriorate rapidly as the typhoon moves close to the Tokyo metropolitan area later in the day.
Parts of the Izu Islands, Chiba Prefecture and other Pacific coastal areas have already recorded heavy rainfall, with some locations receiving more than 300mm since Sept 19.
The JMA said rainfall could intensify from Monday afternoon as Dujuan approaches Kanto, which includes Tokyo and its surrounding prefectures.
Authorities also warned that linear rain bands could develop over Kanto and central Japan, potentially dumping intense rainfall over narrow areas for several hours and sharply increasing the threat of flooding and other rain-related disasters.
The approaching typhoon has also disrupted the Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture, where organisers postponed the equestrian eventing competition until Sept 22.
Dujuan arrives amid a year marked by extreme weather globally, with intense rainfall, flooding and tropical cyclones affecting regions across East Asia, North America and Europe.
