United States (US) and Chinese officials held talks on trade and the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in New York, ahead of a planned summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington had proposed a mechanism for both sides to exchange information on AI development.
“We want a shared vision of common goals and common threats,” Bessent said on Sunday after what he described as a “very successful” meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
He gave no further details but recently said the US was open to talks with China on reducing risks associated with AI.
Bessent said the two sides also discussed the Board of Trade proposed by Trump.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the talks, held at the New York headquarters of JPMorgan Chase, were aimed at laying the groundwork for a successful meeting between Trump and Xi on Thursday.
US media reported that Xi is expected to arrive in Washington on Wednesday.
Another key issue is whether the two sides will extend their current tariff truce, which expires on Nov 10.
A senior US government official accused China of failing to fully implement its commitment to ease supplies of critical minerals, while Beijing said the two sides would discuss economic and trade issues without providing further details.
The Iran war and tensions over Taiwan are also expected to feature at Thursday’s summit, while China’s ties with Russia could also be discussed.
