Johnny Depp has made his first public appearance in China as an artist, visiting Shanghai’s Modern Art Museum for his solo exhibition, Johnny Depp: A Bunch of Stuff Presents Figures of the Fringe.
Depp was at the museum on September 19 and 20 to view the exhibition and attend events held alongside it. The visit marked his first public appearance in China as an artist.
During his time in Shanghai, Depp recreated Bunnyman, a recurring figure in his artwork that he has linked to a childhood dream. The character has featured in his paintings and other visual work over the years.
He also painted with children from remote mountain communities in southwestern China, adding a collaborative element to his visit.
At a September 20 gathering with visitors and the media, Depp spoke about his creative work across film, music, painting and writing. He discussed how characters, memories and personal experiences have influenced his work across different mediums.
Hypebeast reports that Depp’s Shanghai appearance included both the Bunnyman recreation and the painting session with children from southwestern China.
The exhibition brings together Depp’s paintings, writing and moving images created over several decades. Curated by Shai Baitel, it is organised around five sections: “Heroes and Icons”, “Lovers and Muses”, “The First Shadows”, “Illusions” and “Masks and Alter Egos”.
Johnny Depp: A Bunch of Stuff Presents Figures of the Fringe opened on August 15 at the Modern Art Museum Shanghai and runs until December 13.
