Malaysia is moving towards licensing e-commerce platforms, with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) ready to implement the regime once the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) and Finance Ministry (MOF) finalise the terms and conditions.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said MCMC already has the authority under the existing legal framework to license e-commerce platforms, but the specific regulatory conditions must first be determined by the relevant ministries.
She said the Communications Ministry had held discussions with MOF and KPDN, with KPDN studying how e-commerce platforms should be regulated.
“MCMC is ready anytime,” Teo said, adding that the regulator had also engaged with a major China-based e-commerce platform amid concerns from local retailers over ultra-low-cost products.
She stressed that any licensing framework would apply across the e-commerce sector rather than target a single platform, with the aim of creating a level playing field and strengthening consumer protection.
