Melaka’s State Legislative Assembly could be dissolved today, with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh expected to make an announcement this afternoon that could pave the way for the state’s 16th election.
Speculation over an imminent dissolution intensified after the weekly state executive council meeting, normally held on Wednesdays, was brought forward to Tuesday.
The anticipated announcement would clear the way for a fresh state election, bringing Melaka back to the polls nearly five years after the previous contest.
Just days ago, Ab Rauf said the dissolution date had yet to be finalised as the state government still had administrative matters to complete, adding that an announcement would be made once a date was settled.
In the last state election, Barisan Nasional secured a commanding majority by winning 21 of the 28 state seats, while Pakatan Harapan took five and Perikatan Nasional two.
The current assembly’s mandate is due to end in Dec 27.
