Open DC Sdn Bhd has announced plans to expand capacity at its data centre facilities in Penang and Kedah to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and cross-border digital connectivity in Northern Malaysia.
The carrier-neutral data centre provider said its expansion plans cover the PE2 campus in Bayan Lepas, Penang, and D8-1 facility in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah.
At PE2, Open DC plans to progressively increase critical power capacity from 30MW towards 100MW across its 10-acre campus, with expansion phases aligned with contracted customer demand.
The facility, which began operations in April 2025 as Penang’s first full-scale, next-generation data centre, has already committed nearly 80% of its initial-phase capacity to customers across the semiconductor, AI, cloud and enterprise sectors.
Open DC managing director Wong Weng Yew said the expansion reflects sustained demand for digital infrastructure beyond Malaysia’s traditional data centre clusters.
“With our initial-phase capacity substantially committed, we are expanding to meet demand from our customers and the market as it develops,” he said.
The PE2 expansion will include high-density modular halls supporting up to 150 kilowatts per rack, with both air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations designed for AI and high-performance computing workloads.
The facility also hosts a transport node for DE-CIX Malaysia’s Penang Internet Exchange, strengthening regional connectivity.
The company did not disclose the investment value or completion timeline for the proposed expansions.
