Pakatan Harapan (PH) has yet to finalise the form of political cooperation it will pursue for the upcoming Melaka state election, with discussions still ongoing among potential partners, including Bersatu, PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
Anwar said PH Election Director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari had been tasked with leading discussions and determining the coalition’s approach.
“I have tasked Amirudin to discuss it. We should not be arrogant. If people say they are ready to discuss, then we discuss. That is how politics works,” Anwar said, adding that any decision on whether PH should proceed with a political understanding would be left to the coalition’s election committee.
“Some people say there is no need, and even discussing it is wrong. Whether we agree or disagree is up to the committee,” he said.
Anwar, who is also PKR president, confirmed that talks had taken place with Bersatu, but stressed that no agreement had been reached.
“We have also discussed it with Bersatu. There is no decision yet. I leave it to the committee. I am focusing on running the country,” he said.
The discussions come amid moves by PH to explore a broader electoral understanding for Melaka. Amirudin had earlier described the proposed “PH Plus” arrangement as more likely to take the form of an electoral understanding rather than a new formal coalition, given the limited preparation period.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission confirmed on Sept 22 that it had received official notification of the dissolution of the Melaka Legislative Assembly, with a special meeting to determine key election dates to be announced later.
