The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will meet Meta on Monday (Sept 28) to address complaints involving WhatsApp accounts that have reportedly been hacked, blocked or become inaccessible, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said.
The meeting follows growing public concern over affected WhatsApp accounts, with MCMC confirming that it is investigating complaints and has referred relevant cases to Meta for clarification and appropriate action.
In a statement, MCMC stressed that account hacking and account blocking are two separate issues, although one could lead to the other.
The commission explained that accounts taken over by unauthorised parties could be used for scams, spam or other activities that breach WhatsApp’s terms of service, potentially resulting in the platform blocking the accounts.
MCMC advised affected users to seek account recovery or submit appeals through WhatsApp’s official channels.
Users were also urged not to share verification codes or security PINs, to enable two-step verification and to avoid suspicious links or applications.
The commission further warned the public against individuals or parties offering account recovery services in exchange for money, personal information or verification codes, as such offers could expose users to further scams.
Malaysians whose account issues remain unresolved after using WhatsApp’s official channels may lodge a complaint with MCMC, which can refer the matter to Meta for further action.
