Avengers: Endgame: Encore opened to US$86 million worldwide this weekend, making the Marvel re-release the top-grossing film at the global box office.
The film made US$26 million in North America and US$60 million overseas. Deadline reported that the international result ranks as the second-biggest foreign opening for a re-release, behind Titanic 3D in 2012.
The new release includes several minutes of footage from Avengers: Doomsday, giving audiences an early look at the next film in the franchise. The added material also helped drive interest in the re-release.
Endgame: Encore earned US$13.7 million from IMAX screenings, with US$4 million coming from North America and US$9.7 million from international markets.
Its US$26 million domestic opening ranks third among re-releases, behind the 1997 reissue of Star Wars, which opened to US$35.9 million, and the 2011 3D re-release of The Lion King, which made US$30.2 million.
Internationally, the film opened at No. 1 in China with US$13.5 million, followed by the UK at US$5.4 million, Mexico at US$4.2 million, Italy at US$2.6 million and Brazil at US$2.2 million. It also led the non-local box office in Japan and Spain.
The re-release has pushed Avengers: Endgame’s lifetime worldwide total to US$2.885 billion. That puts it behind Avatar at US$2.92 billion and ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day at US$2.495 billion.
The weekend also saw Resident Evil hold second place worldwide with US$50.3 million in its second weekend, bringing its global total to US$196.5 million. Heart of the Beast followed with US$50.1 million worldwide.
Universal’s Forgotten Island opened in North America while adding US$5.6 million from 34 international markets. Its worldwide weekend total reached US$18.4 million.
