The Ministry of Health (MOH) has cancelled the cosmetic notification for GB Daily Glow Skin Cream after the product was found to contain scheduled poison mercury, making it no longer permitted for sale in Malaysia, Bernama reported.
MOH said mercury is prohibited in cosmetics as it can be absorbed into the body and cause damage to the kidneys and nervous system.
It can also affect brain development in young children and unborn babies, while exposure may cause rashes, irritation and other skin changes.
The ministry urged consumers to avoid buying or using the affected product.
“Members of the public who are currently using this cosmetic are advised to immediately stop using it and seek advice from a healthcare professional if they experience any discomfort or adverse effects,” MOH said in a statement today.
Consumers are also encouraged to check the notification status of cosmetic products and the list of cancelled cosmetic notifications through the official website of the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).
Sellers and distributors of the affected cosmetic have been instructed to immediately stop its sale and distribution.
“The sale and distribution of this cosmetic product violates the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984,” MOH said.
Individuals found guilty under the regulations can face a maximum fine of RM25,000 or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, for a first offence. Subsequent offences carry a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
Companies can be fined up to RM50,000 for a first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
