Further Earthquakes Detected In Aceh With Magnitude 6.1 Scale

Further earthquakes were detected in Indonesia on Sunday, including a 6.1-magnitude quake followed by a 5.9-magnitude tremor in Aceh, with shaking felt across several areas.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck at 5:55 am local time off Southwest Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara. Its epicentre was about 14km southwest of Kodi at a depth of 10km.

Strong tremors were felt in West Sumba and West Manggarai, while shaking was also reported in East Sumba and Manggarai.

About 42 minutes later, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off Aceh at 6:37 am. The epicentre was located about 68km southwest of Calang at a depth of 26km.

Tremors from the Aceh earthquake were felt in several areas, including Aceh Besar, Banda Aceh, West Aceh, South Aceh, Pidie Jaya, Bener Meriah, Nagan Raya and Central Aceh.

BMKG advised residents in affected areas to remain alert for possible aftershocks.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from either earthquake, according to Bernama.
