Selangor recorded the highest number of environmental complaints in Malaysia, with 4,041 cases lodged with the Department of Environment (DOE) between Jan 1 and Sept 30, 2026.
DOE chief assistant director for enforcement Ahmad Saifful Salihin said Johor ranked second with 2,104 complaints, followed by Perak with 1,034, Penang with 977 and Kuala Lumpur with 894.
Nationwide, the department received 13,296 environmental complaints during the nine-month period.
“Selangor continues to record the highest number of complaints, with a total of 4,041 complaints this year,” Ahmad Saifful said during an engagement session between the DOE and media practitioners.
Selangor and Johor together accounted for about 46% of the 72,717 environmental complaints recorded nationwide between 2021 and September 2026.
Air pollution remained the dominant category this year, with 11,301 complaints, or 84.3% of the total, according to the department.
Open burning accounted for the largest share with 9,752 complaints, followed by odour-related complaints at 1,697, dust at 796, industrial emissions at 388 and smoke at 117.
Selangor also recorded the highest number of open-burning complaints at 2,849 cases, followed by Johor with 1,338, Perak with 870, Penang with 792 and Kuala Lumpur with 774.
