Borrowers still owed the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) RM10.7 billion in outstanding loan repayments as at Aug 31, involving 1.16 million borrowers, the Ministry of Higher Education said.
In a written parliamentary reply, the ministry said various measures had been taken and would continue to be implemented to improve loan management and repayment collection.
The ministry said it was reviewing the terms and conditions of PTPTN loans to make assistance more targeted towards those who need it, taking into account the corporation’s financial capacity.
It was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias (Jelebu) on the latest amount owed by PTPTN borrowers and measures to improve loan repayments.
The ministry said repayment collection would also be strengthened through enforcement measures and strategic cooperation with government agencies and corporations.
“Another initiative is to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of loan repayment collection through the implementation of enforcement measures as well as strategic cooperation with government and corporate agencies,” it said.
PTPTN continues to encourage borrowers to negotiate and restructure their repayment plans according to their financial capabilities.
Borrowers may also apply for repayment deferments subject to the flexibility and conditions allowed, the ministry said.
