Feeling Burdened By Taxes? The Reality Is, We Benefit From Them Every Day

Every year, beginning in March, Malaysians carry out their responsibility as taxpayers by reporting their income and paying taxes. However, not everyone realises that the taxes paid are actually returned to the people in various forms of facilities and services that are used almost every day. In reality, taxes are not merely an obligation, but a foundation for national development and societal well-being.

It is common to hear complaints from some taxpayers who view paying taxes as a burden. Some even question where their tax money goes each year. Yet, without realising it, the benefits derived from these tax contributions are enjoyed both directly and indirectly not only by individuals themselves, but also by their spouses, children, and even parents. From basic infrastructure to social protection, all are funded through tax revenue that is often questioned.

In truth, almost every aspect of our daily lives is closely linked to the taxes collected by the government. From the moment we leave our homes to go to work, we rely on roads maintained through tax revenue. Streetlights that illuminate our journeys at night, road signs, as well as safety features such as bridges and traffic lights, are all funded by the same source.

In the education sector, tax contributions play a significant role. Children attend government schools equipped with facilities, benefit from low fees, receive textbooks, preschool assistance and have opportunities to pursue higher education at public institutions. All these are benefits made possible through tax revenue. Without this funding, access to quality education on a wide scale may not be available to Malaysians.

Similarly, in the healthcare sector, the benefits of taxes are experienced by all levels of society. Parents receive treatment at government hospitals at minimal cost, children benefit from free immunisations, and mothers can give birth safely without bearing high medical expenses. These services are funded through tax revenue, even though they are often taken for granted.

National security also depends on tax contributions. Security forces such as the police, military, and fire and rescue services play a crucial role in ensuring peace and stability. The sense of safety that people enjoy in their daily lives with their families is a blessing that is rarely associated directly with tax contributions.

Tax revenue is also evident in the development of national infrastructure. Projects such as highways, bridges, public transportation systems, as well as essential services like clean water supply and electricity, greatly enhance the quality of life. Daily activities such as sending children to school or bringing parents for medical treatment rely on infrastructure built through tax funding.

In addition, various forms of government assistance and subsidies are funded by taxes. Cash assistance, fuel subsidies, cooking oil, sugar subsidies and educational aid help ease the cost of living for the rakyat. In many cases, taxpayers themselves or their family members are among the beneficiaries of these initiatives.

Furthermore, public cleanliness and solid waste management also depend on tax revenue. Waste collection services, maintenance of residential areas, recreational parks and public facilities are among the everyday conveniences that are often overlooked.

Tax contributions also support social and community development. Youth development programmes, sports activities, arts and cultural initiatives provide opportunities for society to lead more balanced and fulfilling lives. Children are given space to grow, while communities can thrive in a harmonious environment.

In conclusion, although some may feel burdened by the obligation to pay taxes, the reality is that these contributions return to us in many forms that often go unnoticed. From ourselves to our spouses, children, and parents, everyone benefits from tax revenue.

Therefore, it is important to view taxes not as a burden, but as an investment in the future for the well-being of our families, society and the nation.
