The government has recovered RM31.3 billion in assets linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and will continue legal action and international cooperation to recover more of the misappropriated funds, Bernama reported.
The Ministry of Finance said the recovery effort was important to reduce the government’s financial burden and protect public interests.
As of Aug 31, 2026, the government had paid RM42.5 billion to meet 1MDB-related commitments, including principal payments, interest, legal fees and operational costs.
“If there is no additional fund recovery in the future, the government will still have to bear the remaining obligation of RM20.1 billion,” the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply.
The ministry was responding to a question from Azli Yusof (PH-Shah Alam) on measures taken following the Auditor General’s Report on public fund leakages, the status of national asset recovery involving major financial scandals and the management of recovered funds.
It said 1MDB currently accounted for the largest asset recovery effort, with the government continuing to strengthen international cooperation and pursue legal avenues to maximise further recoveries.
