Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing departed Malaysia on Oct 8’s afternoon after concluding a two-day official visit that secured an agreement on the large-scale repatriation of Myanmar nationals and renewed commitments to strengthen bilateral and economic cooperation.
Min Aung Hlaing and his delegation departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 2.10pm aboard a special flight following a ceremonial send-off at the Bunga Raya Complex.
He was accorded a red-carpet farewell and a guard-of-honour by the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, led by Capt Wan Muhammad Amirul Syafiq Wan Zamri.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who served as minister-in-attendance, was present to see off the delegation.
The visit saw Myanmar agree to undertake the large-scale repatriation of its nationals at its own expense, following bilateral discussions between Min Aung Hlaing and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya.
Anwar said more than 10,493 Myanmar nationals and personnel had been repatriated through flights and naval vessels, with further arrangements to be negotiated between the home affairs ministries of both countries.
He said the remaining repatriations would be carried out in accordance with stipulated procedures, subject to verification of records.
Both countries also agreed to strengthen bilateral relations, prioritise people-centric cooperation and support Myanmar’s efforts to pursue reforms and policy adjustments to address its complex challenges.
On the economic front, bilateral economic activities between Malaysia and Myanmar have increased by more than 140% year-on-year, highlighting opportunities for deeper trade and investment ties.
