Vision First To All Malaysians

When was the last time you had your eye examined? There are more than a billion people who can’t see well, because they don’t have access to glasses. Over 3 out of 4 of the world’s vision impaired are avoidably so. What can be done to arrest this unconscionable fact?

In conjunction with World Sight Day 2019, Focus Point Holdings Bhd (Focus Point) is holding a campaign to bring awareness to the importance of eye health and how accessibility can be improved to Malaysians through talks and on-ground activities.

A study on myopia which was conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2016 indicates that one out of ten children in Malaysia have undiagnosed vision problem and children between 4 to 6 years suffer from eye-related problems which can lead to permanent visual impairment and even blindness if untreated.

The current global prevalence rate of myopia is at 30 percent and is estimated to increase to 50 percent by 2050 which is a staggeringly close to one billion.

“Focus Point’s goal is to educate the public on the importance of sight and proper eye care, and to bring attention to the prevailing global issue pertaining to preventable blindness, visual impairment and the rise of myopia or short-sightedness among school children and young adults,” said Dato’ Liaw Choon Liang, President and CEO of Focus Point.

Focus Point’s school outreach programme has impacted more than eighty schools nationwide. The company has made provisions for spectacles for children who require them on top of providing eye checks and educating students on proper procedures to care for their sight.

Another key element to Focus Point’s 2019 campaign is to support Rotary Club, OneSight Foundation, Kiwanis Malaysia to develop awareness and effect changes at grassroots levels by visiting schools, rural communities and homes in selected states in Malaysia.

As part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, Focus Point is raising funds for the underprivileged community through the sale of special editions mugs which come in four unique designs.

Focus Point’s roadshow will be from 7-13 October 2019, being held at Sunway Pyramid.
