Several areas in Malaysia remain at risk of experiencing hazy conditions and reduced visibility from Aug 27 to 31, potentially affecting National Day activities in Putrajaya on Aug 31, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia).
MET Malaysia said its analysis of weather forecast models showed that the risk of haze was being influenced by prevailing southwesterly winds and the continued high number of hotspots detected in southern Sumatra and western Kalimantan.
The department’s MyCMAQ haze concentration model indicated that Sarawak could be the worst-affected area, with most districts expected to experience unhealthy haze conditions.
Several districts in Sarawak could also reach the very unhealthy level on Aug 30 and 31, according to the forecast model.
In Sabah, hazy conditions are expected to begin from Aug 29, while several areas in Peninsular Malaysia could also experience elevated haze concentrations through Aug 31.
The areas identified include Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
The forecast raises the possibility of reduced visibility in Putrajaya on National Day, when various celebrations and activities are scheduled to take place.
However, MET Malaysia has stressed that the forecasts remain subject to changes in weather and atmospheric conditions.
The department said it is continuously monitoring the situation and will update its forecasts based on the latest developments in weather and atmospheric conditions.
The haze risk comes as Malaysia prepares to mark National Day on Aug 31, with Putrajaya serving as one of the key locations for the country’s celebrations.
Authorities and members of the public are therefore advised to monitor the latest weather and haze updates, particularly as conditions could change in the days leading up to National Day.
