The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is urgently seeking confirmation from Nepalese authorities over unverified reports circulating on social media regarding possible casualties involving Malaysians following severe flooding in Rasuwa District, Nepal.
The ministry said it had not received any official confirmation of Malaysian casualties as of the latest update.
Through the Embassy of Malaysia in Kathmandu, the ministry is working closely with the Nepalese authorities, search and rescue teams, the Nepal Tourism Board, travel agencies and major hospitals in Kathmandu to establish the safety and whereabouts of Malaysian nationals affected by the floods.
“The Ministry urges the public to refrain from speculating or sharing unverified information and respectfully requests members of the media not to publish or amplify such reports,” it said in a statement.
It warned that the circulation of unverified information could cause unnecessary alarm and distress to the families involved, while urging all parties to await official updates and respect the privacy of affected families.
The ministry said Malaysia’s diplomatic network in the region had also been activated to support the efforts.
The High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi and the Embassy of Malaysia in Beijing are engaging with relevant authorities in their respective countries to assist in verifying information and locating affected Malaysians.
Meanwhile, the ministry’s Operations Room in Putrajaya has been operational since noon to coordinate information and provide a direct channel of communication for Malaysians in affected areas and their families.
Family members with relevant information on Malaysians who may be affected are urged to contact the ministry and provide details including their full names, passport numbers, travel itineraries, last known locations and contactable telephone numbers.
The ministry said it would continue to monitor developments closely and provide official updates as more information becomes available.
