Sabah Poised For Regional Production Hub For Hydrogen And Renewable Energy

Sabah is looking to become a regional hub to produce hydrogen and renewable energy through the development of a comprehensive upstream, downstream, management business activities logistics as well as sales of energy that is generated.

The Sabah State Government through its wholly owned company, Smart Sabah Corporation Sdn Bhd has identified some major projects including proposals for Large Scale Solar Development for Production of Hydrogen Gas; Development of Green Independent Power Plant with 3500 MW and Development of OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) system and others that will be updated at a later date. The project is expected to bring in a direct investment return of RM25 billion to the State and potetially create 20,000 job opportunities.

Among the locations that have been identified for the purpose of the proposal the development of such projects includes an area of 50,000 hectares in Kalabakan area, Pulau Layang-Layang- Kudat and Kelumpang Island - Tawau.

Kicking off the inititative Smart Sabah Corporation Sdn Bhd has signed a cooperation agreement with Malaysian Green Technology And Climate Change Corporation (MGTC),  to begin studies on feasibility,, while development is expected to begin in 2022.

The East Malaysia State Government also invites relevant investors and industry players from to explore opportunities and open to partnership with Smart Sabah Corporation.
