Inflation Rate Registered a Hike of 2.3% in April 2022, Driven by Food Inflation Higher: DoSM

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Malaysia rose 2.3% in April 2022 from a year earlier, led by higher food prices, according to the official statement released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) on May 25, 2022.

Food inflation in April 2022 was higher year-on-year (y-o-y) at 4.1% with 89.1% of food items in the CPI’s food and non-alcoholic beverages group recording increases.

“The increase in food inflation, which contributed the highest weightage to the overall weight of CPI, remained to be a major contributor to inflation,” DOSM chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the restaurants and hotels segment rose 3.2% while the transport portion climbed 3%, furnishings, household equipment & routine household maintenance up 2.7%, miscellaneous goods & services climbed 1.8 %, and recreation services & culture rose 1.3%.
