FBM KLCI Gains Narrowed at Eleventh Hour

Kuala Lumpur, July 29 – Bursa Malaysia closed in mildly positive note on Friday as the barometer index FBM KLCI climbed 1.03 points or +0.07% to 1,492.23. The index narrowed its gains at the eleventh hour ahead of the weekend. The debate on whether US has on the verged of dipping into a technical recession is magnified as the newly released economic indicator showed US economy was declining for a second quarter, the most of Asian equities markets closed in red. The market anticipation is such that with a softening of the US economy, the tightening of monetary policy would come be paced slowly. Also, China’s economy growth could miss the target as the lack of a GDP mention was notable during the Politburo – a cause of concerns for investors in Asia.

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,491.17. The index fluctuated between 1,488.07– 1,497.53.

** 557 counters are gainers, 412 counters are unchanged, while 383 counters are losers.

** Total volume of 2,791,795,900 shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 1,980,150,450

* Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) dropped 6.69 points or -0.21% to 3,213.96 ;  Hong Kong’s HSI ceded 466.17 points or -2.26% at 20,156.51 ; Japan’s Nikkei 225 down 13.84 points or -0.05% at 27, 801.64 ; Korea’s Kospi Index climbed 16.23 points or +0.67% at 2,451.50; Shanghai’s SSE Index dropped 29.34 points or -0.89% at 3,253.24 ; Australia’s All Ordinaries index climbed 57.90 points or +0.81% at 7,173.80.
