Asian Stocks Bound Back, Gains Capped by Fed Concerns

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 9 (Friday) – Bursa Malaysia closed in positive territory today with the main index FBM KLCI rose 1.80 points or +0.12% to 1,496.53. The upward movement of the KLCI was in line with the performance of regional stock market, however, the gain was still capped as the investors are cautiously toeing the line in view of the hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve. Meanwhile, most Asian stock markets closed in positive note, tracked the extended gains of Wall Street performance as the dollar and Treasury yields came off recent highs. Coming off the recent sell-off, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index, which is heavily technology-weighted, was the best performer for the day among the peers, leapt 2.69% lifted by technology stocks such as Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, Meituan. While AIA, Ping An, HKEX also rallied. The rally is understood after the statement made by President Xi ashe vowed to help the SMEs and Beijing’s promise to increase spending in the third quarter.

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,495.75. The index fluctuated between 1,493.15 – 1,498.08

** 456 counters are gainers, 407 counters are unchanged, while 336 counters are losers.

** Total volume of 2,358,318,800 shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 1,484,136,536

* Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) rose 30.79 points or +0.95% to 3,264.40; Hong Kong’s HSI leapt 507.63 points or +2.69% at 19,362.25; Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index climbed 149.47 points or +0.53% at 28,214.75; Shanghai’s SSE Index advanced 26.47 points or +0.82% at 3,262.05; Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 climbed 45.50 points or +0.66% at 6,894.20.
