Climate action app Caremiles and Mastercard have launched an initiative to plant 50,000 trees, to support global reforestation efforts.

To double the impact, Mastercard will match all cardholder donations for tree planting until the end of 2022, and also offer a range of additional rebates and rewards for eligible users.

The campaign is open to all Mastercard cardholders in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Burma, Brunei, Laos and Cambodia.

With each tree costing just US$2 to plant, cardholders who donate enough to plant five or more trees will receive a US$5 (RM23) rebate, while cardholders who help to plant 50 or more trees will receive a US$100 (RM453) rebate[2]. Every donor will receive a certificate showing how many trees their donation funded.

Caremiles is a leader in consumer-oriented carbon tracking and reduction through an app that calculates the impact of users’ vehicles using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. Users can see how many trees they’ve saved by driving their electric or hybrid vehicle, or how many trees they would need to plant to compensate for their gas usage. Instead of complex terms, users track their carbon emissions and impact simply as numbers of trees.

This partnership is part of Mastercard’s Priceless Planet Coalition (PPC), a platform that unites corporate sustainability efforts and engages businesses and consumers to take collective actions to drive positive change for the planet.

The Coalition uses a reforestation model that’s not only focused on planting trees, but on re-growing forests in geographies with the greatest need and most potential for positive climate, community and biodiversity impact.

The PPC is working to plant 100 million trees globally by 2025 and is currently driving contributions to 18 global reforestation projects in Cambodia, the Philippines, Brazil and Kenya. Launched by Mastercard in January 2020, PPC brings together companies, communities and consumers in climate action and now includes more than 100 partners globally, including sustainably minded merchants, fintech firms and global banks.

Donations to this campaign will support the planting of trees in one of the Priceless Planet Collation sites worldwide, with preference given to the Southeast Asia region. Mastercard cardholders can visit www.caremiles.app/ppc to participate.
